Anxiety: Panicking About Panic by Joshua Fletcher

My review

3/5 stars

I've done a lot of reading about anxiety over the past 10 years. This book didn't offer anything particularly new on the subject, but served as a good introduction to how anxiety might present itself in the body, alongside some useful tips for overcoming.

I liked how each symptom was broken down and explained - it gave me a better understanding of how some of the things I worry about could actually be a by-product of my worry (what a vicious cycle to be a part of). I'm cautious of the fact that they are laid in order of commonality - it's useful, but it also served to trigger some anxiety about whether or not my anxiety was valid because I don't experience some of the more common symptoms.

My favourite part of the book was the advice to ignore all the individual symptoms and just address everything as part of the wider anxiety problem. It seems to obvious when it's said out loud, but I've never come across it in such a blunt way before and it really helped drive home the message.

The author read the audiobook himself, and provided a lovely balance of warmth and authority, which provided a healthy sense of reassurance and safety when listening to the book; just what you need with such sensitive and triggering content.
