By Any Other Name by Lauren Kate
My review
5/5 stars
Books that have books feature in the story are my favourite. I needed something light after a month of reading non-fiction, so I hopped into this quick read and loved it!
Lanie is a book editor working with the biggest author around, and has to help them overcome their writers' block. She is a wonderfully endearing character, with an eccentric grandmother and a few nutty friends. She's thoughtful and determined and I rooted from her right from the start of the book.
In the course of her work, she finds out that the reclusive writer that shes working with is, in fact, a man by the name of Noah Ross. He is a warm, charming, adventurous male protagonist. I enjoyed his chemistry with Lanie and how they interacted with each other from day one. Their underlying friendship, because they've been working together for years, really makes the story feel fuller.
The romance element of the story felt very well done. It was a slow-burn with a hopeful, open ending. I particularly enjoyed how they used the book being written within the story to advance the plot itself.
I whizzed through this in a little over 24 hours and it was great fun. Very sweet and easy reading.
Book blurb
One summer to write the biggest love story of the year . . .
But will it be theirs?
Noa Calloway is THE bestselling author of sweeping love stories. Love stories that careful editor Lanie has shaped her life around. Noa's writing makes her feel seen and understood like nothing else.
So she's more than a little shocked to find out that her beloved, reclusive, author is actually Noah Ross - a distractingly handsome man - and not at all the glamorous middle-aged woman she'd imagined.
Even worse - Noah has writer's block. With her job on the line, Lanie has to work with him to spark the crucial inspiration Noah needs to write his next heart-stopping romance.
Yet as they show each other all their favourite spots in New York City - Lanie can't help but wonder if the man by her side, and the author that stole her heart, might actually not be so different after all . . .
