The Knight's Kiss by Sally Nicholls

My review

1/5 stars

I grabbed this on a whim from the library based on the cover alone. It was a good lesson in don't judge a book by it's cover.

Despite knowing that the story was going to be short from the offset, the story felt very rushed and incomplete. There was no depth to the characters or the plot whatsoever, it was a whistlestop tour of a story that had real potential but didn't deliver on any of it.

Similarly the romance, the thing that was supposed to be the main element of the story, lacked any meaning or intensity. It felt very much like a stereotypical Disney-like love in a split second without any real explanation. I didn't root for either couple at any point, because I didn't know enough about any of them.

Having read a bit more about the book, I now know that the book is aimed at young adults who are struggling to get into reading, and in that capacity I can see that it is fulfilling its requirements - it's short, it's surface-level and it's easy to get through. For me, it just lacked anything that makes it more than a 10 minute flick-through read. Serves me right for grabbing it without figuring out what it was about!
