Don't Overthink It by Anne Bogel

Book Review Sep 16, 2024

My review

2/5 stars

The book is sold as an exploration of useful strategies to help cut out overthinking for all problems, big and small. Sadly, I really struggled to relate to this content, in spite of being a chronic overthinker who is always on the lookout for anything that will help.

There were a few reasons that I didn't enjoy this book as much as I hoped to. The first is that the content was very simplistic. It barely scratched the surface of what overthinking can look like and how to deal with it, with absolutely no information on how to tackle the root cause of the overthinking or what happens when overthinking becomes a problem that affects daily life.

The second is that I also found it challenging to connect to a lot of the anecdotes that the author chose to share. I'm not sure I can put my finger on why, all I can say is that nothing really resonated with me.

The third is that the writing style was far too wordy. The book could have been half the size and given the same information. The messages got lost in a mess of unnecessary language and repetition.

The one thing I did like about this book was the author's voice. I did this on audiobook and found her voice to be quite soothing to listen to.

In short, this book wasn't for me.

Book blurb

We've all been there: stuck in a cycle of what-ifs, plagued by indecision, paralyzed by the fear of getting it wrong. Nobody wants to live a life of constant overthinking, but it doesn't feel like something we can choose to stop doing. It feels like something we're wired to do, something we just can't escape. But is it?
Anne Bogel's answer is no. Not only can you overcome negative thought patterns that are repetitive, unhealthy, and unhelpful, you can replace them with positive thought patterns that will bring more peace, joy, and love into your life. In Don't Overthink It, you'll find actionable strategies that can make an immediate and lasting difference in how you deal with questions both small--Should I buy these flowers?--and large--What am I doing with my life? More than a book about making good decisions, Don't Overthink It offers you a framework for making choices you'll be comfortable with, using an appropriate amount of energy, freeing you to focus on all the other stuff that matters in life.
